Hyundai HB20 caught unawares on a street in Brazil

After countless teasers, the HB20 is finally revealed in its full flesh. Carros.uol.com.br brings us exclusive images of the HB20 caught during its photoshoot on a street of Sao Paulo in Brazil. We must say that it is very aggressive and sporty, even more than its Indian cousin, the Hyundai i20.
We have been tracking the HB20 for a while now and we cannot stop talking about it. As the i20 is doing the job for Hyundai, the HB20 may have no future in India. The HB20 is like a Brazilian cousin of the Hyundai i20. It shares the same platform, more or less the same components but looks very different both on the inside and outside.

The HB20 is a 5 door hatchback featuring Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design. It will sport a 1L, 3 cylinder petrol engine with 80 hp or a 1.6L, 4 cylinder petrol engine with 130 hp. The engine is married to a manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic.

Hyundai HB20 features

  • Sound system with CD/AUX/USB
  • Tilt adjusted steering wheel with mounted controls
  • Power steering/windows/locks
  • Electrically operated OVRMs
  • Rear parking sensor
  • 15 inch alloy wheels with tires 185/60
  • Fog lights
  • Parking sensors
  • ABS is optional but driver and passenger airbags are standard across variants.
The Hyundai HB20 will be produced in the Sao Paulo factory in Brazil which has a production capacity of more than 100,000 units annually. It is expected to grace dealerships in Brazil in the first week of October and sold via all 130 outlets. The main rival to the HB20 will be the Toyota Etios and Fiat Palio.

We would love to see Maruti Suzuki India LTD bring down the Chinese A-Star facelift

As well all know the A-Star, globally known as the Alto, is receiving a comprehensive facelift in China. Though the changes, revealed through spyshots, are mostly cosmetic, they are nevertheless very interesting

The new design is much sharper and takes away some of the feminine aspect of the design. It features new headlamps, new grill, new front bumper and new foglamps. At the rear, it features new tail lamps and a new bumper. It continues to be powered by the same 1L K-series engine mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.

The vehicle looks showroom-ready and is likely to debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show later in the year.

The A-Star is suffering heavily in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio. Even after its interior revamp earlier this year, it managed to sell only 583 units last month, which is a lot lesser than rivals like the Hyundai i10 and Maruti Wagon R.
While Maruti Suzuki has not confirmed whether this facelift will hit Indian streets, we think the A-Star badly needs a fresh start. We understand that most of Maruti Suzuki’s resources will be dedicated towards the ‘Alto 800’ – a replacement to the legendary Maruti 800, this festive season, but the automaker needs to do something about the A-Star to help it survive until an all-new Alto/A-Star is ready internationally.

Next generation Corolla Altis may have similarities with the Auris

The Malaysian counterpart to our Shoeb, Theophilus Chin, has produced an instant rendering of the 2014 Toyota Corolla by extending the Auris hatch.

None of us know the form the next generation Corolla will take as Toyota is yet to begin testing and hasn’t brought a preview concept.
We are asked to expect drama, a clear departure and design nuggets featuring on the NS4 plug-in hybrid concept and the China-only Yundong Shaungqing concept.
According to media reports that have emerged these past few months, the new Corolla Altis could transform like the Avalon, which turned from a boring three-box into a four-door fastback coupe.
Some of our readers who drive the Corolla everyday feel Toyota India should clearly demarcate the taxi-spec Corolla from the family-man variants. During a recent interaction with some customers, a bigger diesel engine and a comprehensive entertainment package were the two features that gained the most votes.
Drivers we met with were not willing to move to other brands and said the experience of owning a Toyota has been completely care-free for them.
We hear that a few Toyota management members from various countries were called into Japan to view a mockup of the car early this year. Toyota India must be planning to drive in the new Corolla sometime in 2014.

Ashok Leyland Stile arriving in early 2013?

Here we are reported that Ashok Leyland won’t take very long before bringing out their version of the Evalia, the Ashok Leyland Stile. Ashok Leyland and Nissan are in a joint venture to manufacture commercial vehicles in India.
According to the report, the Stile will be launched in the first quarter of 2013. The Nissan Evalia, marketed as a family vehicle, will reach stores sometime in late September.
The report claims that the Stile will use the Dost’s 1.5L three-cylinder engine instead of the Evalia’s 1.5K four-cylinder K9K unit. The engine will be tuned to improve the van’s fuel efficiency, thereby increasing the operator’s savings.

Ashok Leyland unveiled the Stile at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo and left everyone guessing about what’s beneath the skin. A wide range of applications will roll out on the platform such as an ambulance van, parcel service vehicle, inter and intra city transport bus, etc. Ashok Leyland has presented such creative variants on the Dost platform as well.
To be able to meet the price target of around 7 lakh rupees, Ashok Leyland engineers are said to be deleting all additional extras and providing a simple interior. Several test mules are currently doing the rounds in Chennai.
From here on, we are going to keep a close watch on this variant, so do write to us if you have spotted a Stile on test.

Hey VW India! Do you see a BIG opportunity in this rendering?

Our good friend from Malaysia Theophilus Chin is known to explore exciting possibilities with existing products.
This time, he has stumbled upon something that probably is  gold mine for Volkswagen India.
What do you see in this rendering? It is a rendering of a Volkswagen Gol converted into an estate. So what, you ask?
Well, look carefully and do you see a potential Maruti Suzuki Ertiga rival?
But it’s a VW Gol, it is not sold in India. True that, but the Volkswagen Gol is just a Brazilian cousin of the Volkswagen Polo which is doing quite well for itself in India. They both share the same platform, more or less the same design, most of the interior and other mechanical components. The Volkswagen Gol and the Volkswagen Polo are essentially twin sisters.
If Volkswagen India is considering to enter the booming MPV segment, they should definitely look at this rendering very carefully.
MPVs are are as hot a property as SUVs. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is currently sitting on 45,000+ orders indicating a huge success story in the making. Nissan plans to carve out a place in this segment with the Evalia and GM India is testing the Enjoy MPV very rigorously on the Indian streets.
Volkswagen India can definitely work on an MPV based on the Polo’s platform. In fact, VW and Skoda can jointly work on an MPV which can be later rebadged under both brands giving huge economies of scale.
But Volkswagen already has the many MPVs in its portfolio such as the Touran and the Sharan. Yes, you are correct; but they are very expensive to build in India. The Sharan for example starts at 29,000 Euros in Europe which translates to 18 lakhs INR. The Touran is slightly cheaper at  but still translates to 16 lakhs. Both options are very expensive for India.
In such a situation, a VW Polo based mini MPV will be much kinder to the customer’s wallet and will set the cash register ringing for Volkswagen India. Either Volkswagen can use the Polo platform to build it, or wait for the MQB platform to arrive before starting out.

Limited Edition Maruti Wagon R Pro out now

Yes, it’s the regular action that Maruti Suzuki produces when sales of a particular model are hard to come by. This time it is a Maruti Wagon R that gets some goodies. We have seen Maruti launch special editions of many slow-selling products (read petrol variants) like the Swift petrol, SX4 and the Estilo in the last year or two.
The special editions have body graphics and accessories, without any substantial increase in price. The extra value they come with is the deciding factor to some people buying the Maruti or driving away in a Hyundai or a Chevrolet.

Called as the Maruti Wagon R Pro, it gets

  • Rear upper spoiler
  • Wheel cover
  • Bumper protector
  • Side molding
  • 16cm 4-way Speaker
  • Stylish graphics
  • Basic mat
  • Car perfume
  • Seat covers
  • USB Double Din System with Bluetoooth
Prices are unavailable for now. But here is our advice – you may want to check out aftermarket parts and accessories as well. You will have more choices and perhaps save a few bucks.

SUV based on the Volkswagen Polo has the Renault Duster in its sight

Volkswagen, globally and in the Indian market, is very much interested to join the compact SUV race.
The German automaker is rumored to be developing a compact SUV based on the Polo platform. This project will be replacement for the VW-Suzuki Rocktan (that was never born) and will specifically target the Dacia Duster, Ford EcoSport, Nissan Juke and the like.
Autoevolution brings us an exclusive rendering of the upcoming Polo-based SUV. The design is influenced from the Volkswagen Cross Coupe concept showcased at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.
The compact SUV will be based on the 2015 VW Polo’s MQB platform. It will sport an aggressive design, all-wheel-drive technology, a rough road package and a dual clutch transmission. The German automaker is also contemplating on a base model with 2WD and a 5-speed manual transmission.
This SUV is very different from the CrossPolo which is essentially a Polo hatchback with a rough road package.
The Audi Q3 and Volkswagen Tiguan are a testimony to the fact that the VW Group can make excellent crossovers. However, this compact SUV will prove a huge challenge because it has to be very price competitive but at the same time should not cannibalize on Skoda’s popular SUV, the Yeti.

A cheaper X3 is just what BMW India needs to take on the Audi Q5 Business Edition

BMW has expanded the BMW X3 range with the inclusion of a new cheaper variant. Called as the BMW X3 sDrive18d, it is the first ever two-wheel drive variant of the BMW X3. With power going to the rear wheels, you can be rest assured that this is a proper BMW.
Clearly, the only question on your mind is how cheap? When the BMW X3 sDrive18d goes on sale in October, it will cost 36,200 Euros (we are talking 24.86 lakhs INR).
The good news does not stop there. It uses 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine with 141hp and 360Nm that delivers 23.55 kmpl on a UK cycle. It is mated to a standard six-speed manual gearbox and an optional eight-speed automatic transmission.
The manual gearbox variant accelerates from 0-100km/hr in 9.9 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 193 km/hr. The automatic model is marginally slower at 10.3 seconds with a top speed of 190 km/h.
BMW wants to build on the good start that the new X3 brought them. They delivered more than 74,000 units of the SUV in the first half of this year to customers globally, a 38% improvement compared to 2011.
Just a day before the BMW X3 was launched in India, Audi India introduced the Q5 Business Edition at a much cheaper price stealing away BMW X3’s thunder. It’s about time BMW India responds to the challenge with the X3 sDrive18d.

Lamborghini to reveal 50th anniversary Special Edition at Pebble Beach

The supercar manufacturer that makes IAB’s dream cars, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A., celebrates its anniversaries lavishly, and celebrates with its customers by introducing special edition models.

The 25th anniversary Countach and then the 40th anniversary Murcielago are two readily available examples to show how much Lamborghini loves to invite customers to join the festivities.
So this year Lamborghini celebrates its 50th anniversary or Golden Jubilee anniversary so you bet that something special is coming our way. Five days from now, at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Lamborghini will be displaying its Sesto Elemento and Urus concepts along with the much-hyped 50th anniversary “special edition” which, as of now, is a secret.
“The presence of sports car enthusiasts at both The Quail and Concorso Italiano make the events the perfect opportunity to unveil our exciting plans for our 50th anniversary,” Lamborghini CEO, Stephen Winkelmann said in a statement.
Two of the most extreme cars that are desperately awaited from Lamborghini’s stable are variants of the Geneva Motor Show showstoppers, the Aventador Roadster and the all carbon fiber, 2.2 million dollar supercar, the Sesto Elemento.
Lamborghini may have updates on the production prospects of these cars and hopefully comment on the Urus’ road to production.

Here is BMW’s future product portfolio

The Paris Motor Show is fast approaching and BMW has big plans for it. We have already told you about the first ever FWD product from BMW’s stable heading to the Paris Motor Show.

Now thanks to BMWBlog, we bring you a sneak peek into BMW’s future product portfolio:
BMW 1 Series / 2 Series
The BMW 1 Series hatchback recently hit the stores with its distinguished front fascia. In 2013, BMW plans to extend the hatchback platform to spawn sedan, coupe and convertible variants. The sedan version of the BMW 1 Series will compete against the Mercedes CLA and Audi A3 hatchback.
The coupe and the convertible version of the 1 Series will be sold under the 2 Series brand – an entirely new lineup from the Bavarian czar.

BMW 3 Series
We have already seen the sedan and touring models of the F30. 2013 will see the BMW 3 Series family being extended to two more models: ActiveHybrid 3 and 3 Series GT.
The ActiveHybrid 3 will be a normal BMW 3 Series model with fuel saving technologies. The 3 Series GT will be a ‘Progressive Activity Coupe’ for people who want something unique in their garage.

BMW 4 Series
Just like the Coupe and Convertible styles of the BMW 1 Series will be sold under the 2 Series moniker, the coupe and convertible variants of the 3 Series will be sold under a new badge, the BMW 4 Series. The BMW 4 series will compete against Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz baby SLS. We are expecting them to hit the stands in 2013-14.

BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5 Series family was recently given a comprehensive overhaul and it was one of the most successful product launches by BMW in recent times. There is no plan for a replacement or a facelift anytime soon. The 5 Series GT however will get a facelift very soon.

BMW 6 Series
Just like the 5 Series, the 6 Series also got an all new successor last year. There’s no action in the 6 Series family for now.

BMW 7 Series
The BMW 7 Series LCI will be available globally by the end of 2012. It has some interesting tech updates like LED corona lights, turn indicators, Night Vision Camera, etc. An all-new model is planned in 2016 featuring an carbon fiber and aluminum body.

BMW Z4
Many test mules of the BMW Z4 have been caught in Europe with camouflaged front and rear fascia hinting at a facelifted BMW Z4 gracing showroom floors very soon. Minor changes will be done to headlights, taillights, side mirrors and gills.

BMW Z2
There are plans to introduce a smaller sportscar to sit under the Z4. It will use the same front-wheel drive UKL platform supporting the BMW 1 Series GT.

BMW X3
A minor facelift is planned for the BMW X3 in 2014 with subtle changes to headlights, taillights, side mirrors and gills.

BMW X4
An entry-level Sports Activity Coupe – BMW X4 – is set to launch in 2014. It will be a smaller BMW X6 based on the X3 platform.

BMW X5
The third generation BMW X5 (codenamed F15) will launch in late 2014 and is based on the new ‘X for All’ platform. It will feature significant weight loss and a more dynamic look.

BMW X6
The X6 Sports Activity will get a new design in 2015.

BMW X7
BMW’s ultra luxury SAV challenger – BMW X7 – is very much on the drawing board, but no ETA for now.

BMW i3 and i8
The ‘i’ sub-brand is taking shape in Europe. The is new electric family will have a city car dubbed i3, and an interpretation of a hybrid sportscar, i8. A smaller i1 and an i5 minivan are also part of the long-term plan.

Rendering – Next Generation Renault Logan

We already know that work has started on the next generation Dacia/Renault Logan. Dacia has been given the Fluence’s C platform to grow up and become a better car

Thanks to the platform sharing, Dacia does not have to work on a whole new platform for the new Logan keeping the costs minimum – very essential if the Romanian brand has to make it through the bad weather.
Once Dacia has launched the Logan, Renault designers will be handed the car. From there the company is expected to rebrand the car and retail it in markets where the Logan sells as a Renault.
Testing of the 2013 Renault Logan began earlier this year in Europe and prototypes, heavily camouflaged, reveal hardly any details. The three things that we can figure out, that is well interpreted in the artist renderings are the wraparound grille, sweeping headlights and a sloping roofline. The design shows less signs of cost saving measures.
Dacia have reportedly increased the wheelbase to 2.7m, from the current 2.6m. Shortly after the launch, Dacia is expected to launch the sporty Stepway version, ala Skoda Fabia Scout.
Codenamed X52, the next gen Logan will be powered by a 1.6-liter petrol, a 2.0-liter petrol and a 1.5-liter dCi diesel. We are expecting Dacia to present the new Logan at the upcoming Paris Motor Show at least in its concept avatar. We must see the production-ready version, not later than Geneva 2013.

Toyota exhibits a very sporty Etios variant at Brazilian launch

At the launch and promotional tour of the Toyota Etios in Brazil, the company showcased variants of the car in different colors and trims

Seeing some of the photographs, we are able to verify that the color palette of Brazil and India don’t exactly match, as Brazil gets colors that India feels awkward to drive in.
If you are in the dark about the Brazilian market, let us explain to you that the Etios has plenty of competition to firefight. The Fiat Palio and Siena, VW Gol and Voyage, Renault Sandero and Logan are some of its chief rivals. The competition is fresh, either from a facelift or a generation change.
However, the Etios exhibit, that tours as part of the promotional event named “Etios Connection,” that attracts a second glance, is a variant adorned with a body kit. Toyota Brazil does not plan to manufacture this car. The car is in attendance to announce that the Etios can take on a racy avatar as well.
We spoke to Brazilian auto expert Eber Carmo, who runs Noticias.automotive.br to get a better perspective on this vehicle -
Toyota brought this particular sport variant of the Etios to the event to give the visitors the impression that it can be sporty, can be good looking, and something beyond the Renault Logan. Many people here in Brazil are saying that Toyota took very long to release a competitor which looks like an expensive Logan.
We know that this is not exactly true, but in a market where looks are so important, Toyota will have a hard time selling the Etios. It might sell well because of Toyota’s reputation for quality and reliability, but those who look for a good looking car will shop elsewhere.

Hyundai’s future product map exposed!

In the global automotive scene, manufacturers come and go all the time. Did you know that Hyundai is the only company that has entered the list of the top 10 global manufacturers in the last decade?

The key reason for the success is Hyundai constantly kept re-inventing themselves and brought something new on the table with each generation.
More importantly, they kept flooding the market with a constant the flow of new products, kept trying in segments where they failed.
TheKoreanCarBlog now gives us an inside look at what Hyundai has in store for us in the next three years.
Accent/Verna: The Verna was launched very recently. Hyundai has planned no major changes until a replacement model arrives in 2016. The Verna will be customized based on the market it is selling in.

Elantra: The Elantra was recently launched in India and if speculations are true then it has already garnered 750 bookings in India.
The Elantra sedan will be facelifted in late 2013 for the 2014. It will also be available in  a more powerful 2.0-liter petrol engine complementing the current 1.8-liter option.

Sonata: A re-designed Sonata is planned for the 2015. It will feature a new ‘fluidic precision’ design philosophy, a mature version of the Fluidic Sculpture. It will be less extrovert and more subtle. Hyundai is also working on the powertrain of the Sonata to acquire better mileage.

Santa Fe: The Santa Fe was recently redesigned with the new ‘Storm Edge’ design language. It will be available in 5 and 7 seat configuration. The seven seater will replace the aging Veracruz. Under the hood of the Santa Fe seven-passenger edition is a 290-hp, 3.3-liter V-6 engine with direct injection.

Tucson: While the Tucson was pulled out from the Indian market a long while back, we believe that there is something cooking in Hyundai India’s office to either bring a modified Tucson or a mini SUV along the same lines. The compact crossover will get a new grille and fascia in 2013 for the 2014 model year. A more aggressive facelift is planned for the 2015 model year.

Will this change your opinion about the Chevrolet Sail?

What is the reaction you get when you talk to your friends about a Chinese car, say over beer at the local bar? Do eyebrows raise, faces flinch, and snacks land on you? In my case, the conversation is interrupted with someone abruptly shifting topics aloud. The moment I start about a BYD, Geely or a SAIC, two of them mimic falling into a coma.

So then, the Chinese car doesn’t feature in the list that counts Megan Fox and the iPhone 5. Not to my friends.
The “Chinese gaadi” Chevrolet Sail was not a crowd puller at the Auto Expo and understandably so. People heard the product’s introduction from the entrance of the Chevy booth – Hi, I’m Sail, I don’t come from the sea. I’m that Chinese car from General Motors that you’ve seen spyshots of on the internet. I’m based off an old platform, with low-quality interior, high fuel efficiency (thanks to my Italian friend Fiat Multijet) and I come at a dirt cheap price.
The show-goers were fascinated with the Stingray and Camaro convertible. The booth girls were busy trying to explain (or see off) the guests who were stunned with the EN-V mobility concept. People took pictures with a Beat balloon. The Tavera Neo3 and the twin-port-grilled Tavera won more glances than the little Sail hatch on the first two days.
The Chinese market is what, 20 times the size of what it is in India? When a CBU-selling BMW or Mercedes decides to make an exclusive car for your country, you know there’s something wrong with them, or there’s something special about your car buying population.
The Chinese market is massive, and I’ll tell you by how much. GM India sold about 3,513 units of the Cruze from January to July 2012.
Can you guess how many Cruzes were sold in China this year?
10,000? 20,000?
1.35 lakhs!
How many units did the CR-V sell in India this year? 100, 200? In China, Honda delivered 105,596 units. The BMW 5 Series did 56,000 units. BMW India has not sold 56,000 units of all its cars combined together since its launch in 2008.
Its not just big sedan and SUVs that sell like popcorn in a cinema theater. The VW Golf for instance, clocked over 70,000 units in seven months. The VW Polo clocked 77,000 units.
But if you see the top 5 best selling cars, there’s one vehicle which you would not believe is China’s favorite.
Yes, we’re talking about the Chevrolet Sail. The Sail is a massive success for SAIC and General Motors in 2012. GM sold 161,297 cars, an improvement of over 41% over 2011, making it China’s second best selling car. In May and July, the Sail was China’s best selling car.
Not shocking? India’s best selling car was for so many years the Maruti Alto. Coming a distant second and third were cars such as the Wagon R, Indica or i10. Its the segment that’s booming, not the product, right?
Wrong!
The best selling car in China is the Buick Excelle (a rebraded Opel Astra, a C-Segment model), while 3rd place is taken by the VW Jetta followed by the Chevrolet Cruze and VW Passat. Many of these cars are sold in different variations, perhaps by different joint ventures, but none of them compete in Sail’s segment or even in its neighbourhood.
There are plenty of local Chinese car companies that manufacture cars at the Sail’s price point, but how come they don’t feature in top 50, let alone top 10?
Has your opinion of the Chevrolet Sail changed this moment?
We’ve been throwing enough light on the Sail since its Indian premiere at the Delhi Auto Expo through spyshots, airing announcements and quotes, but we’re still uncertain about this product’s USP. What is special about this car? The image-boosting Jetta and Passat are built like tanks and have turbocharged engines. The Cruze’s cockpit, design and acceleration are commendable, it leaves an impression on you when you drive it fast. The Asta platform is sporty and offers spirited driving, and cars like these are preferred by young buyers.
Since the design is bland and the interior is simple, the Sail’s price, the Fiat engine’s high fuel economy and GM’s three-year free maintenance plan are the only assets we think can be highlighted here in India.
In China, the Sail gets 1.2L and 1.4L naturally aspirated petrol engines, tuned for fuel economy. They don’t offer service plans or extra goodies.

MB USA to begin shipping GL-Class kits to Asian assembly lines in May 2013

Kits of the second generation Mercedes GL Class SUV will be shipped out of the US in May 2013, according to a report on Gadsden Times.

The new GL Class will be manufactured at Mercedes’ plant in Alabama, Vance, and will reach U.S. dealer showrooms next month.
The Vance plant has already started shipping knocked-down kits of the new ML Class to plants in Asia. Mercedes Benz India is likely to start assembly of the ML Class during the festival season at its plant in Pune.
At present Mercedes Benz sells fully-loaded CBU units of the ML Class. MB USA’s president Marcus Schaefer said he will also send some personnel to the Indian plant to help kick start assembly.

Read more details about the 2013 Mercedes GL Class:
Mercedes Benz has also confirmed the entry of the new GL Class into India next year. Like the ML Class, the new 7-seat GL Class will start out in India as a CBU and thereafter will be assembled locally. Mercedes is likely to fit the new GL Class with a 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine generating 240hp, paired to a 7-speed automatic transmission.
Mercedes Benz runs assembly plants in India, Indonesia and Thailand. These plants assemble the C Class, E Class and S Class models.

Come 2015, Hyundai will be looking to take down the BMW 3 Series

The ambitious Koreans have a new plan. After entering the list of top 10 automotive manufacturers in the world in the shortest possible time, Hyundai is now spreading their wings in a territory where the Germans rule.

Many Hyundai cars such as the Veloster, Genesis, Equus were path breaking for Hyundai.
Now, if reports are to be believed, Hyundai is planning another path breaking product to challenge the BMW 3 Series.
AutomotiveNews reports that Hyundai is developing a rear wheel drive sedan codenamed ‘RK’ to challenge the BMW 3 Series in its own territory. The new sedan will use the Hyundai Genesis platform as a base. Further details are very slim on this new sedan but we know that it’s a good three-four years away from production.
Hyundai-Kia have been steadily climbing up the value chain into higher-priced segments. The Verna, Elantra, Sonata, Genesis and Equus are a true testimony to this fact. Hyundai has also developed a complete range of crossovers and is planning to do an Audi Q7 rival later in the decade.
But can Hyundai emulate the true driving pleasure of a RWD sedan that is ingrained in BMW’s DNA?

The cat is out of the bag! After a leak yesterday, Land Rover has finally revealed the 2013 Range Rover for the internet. As you are already aware, we have been following the development of the Range Rover like a pug following a particular mobile phone subscriber.

Land Rover arduously tested the new Range Rover for 18 months and in 20 countries to make sure that the final product is as technically advanced and uber luxurious a car in the company’s history.
This fourth generation Range Rover will be making its official debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. So let’s get down to business.

What has changed in the 2013 Range Rover?

Design

  • The design of the 2013 Range Rover is evolutionary rather than revolutionary in a very smooth and sleek way.
  • Influence from the baby brother Evoque is clearly visible on both ends.
  • At the front, it gets slender sweptback headlights, a three-bar grille, a clean bumper design.
  • The side profile features backwards-sloping roofline, streamlined door handles and an all new alloy design.
  • The rear gets new tail lamps that intrude in the side profile.
  • The same upright and slab-sided greenhouse continues in the new model.  Other features that are carried over from the old design include the floating roof, the clamshell bonnet, the blacked-out pillars and the two-piece tailgate.

Platform

  • Owing to the new emission norms, Land Rover has opted in for a new pressed aluminum monocoque making the successor as much as 317kg lighter than its predecessor.
  • It is the first sport-ute with an all-aluminum unibody structure.
  • The total weight equates to 5,150 pounds, roughly a hundred pounds less than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
  • The body is 39 percent lighter than the steel-bodied 2012 Range Rover.
  • It features an extended wheelbase (by about 100 mm), wider track wheels and spacious interior. Rear legroom has been increased by 4.7 inches.

Mechanicals

  • The new aluminum structure is stiffer in both torsion and bending.
  • The front and rear subframes are made completely made from aluminum. They support newly designed, all-independent air suspension systems.
  • It has been bestowed with the latest in electronic ride and stability control equipment.
  • The new SUV has a re-engineered adaptive air suspension.
  • It features an updated more responsive Terrain Response 2 Auto system. The new technology reads conditions more quickly and automatically makes adjustments to traction control, transmission, electronic differential, transfer box and air suspension.

Interiors

  • The new cabin is influenced by the Range Rover Autobiography edition.
  • It has a TFT screen instead of instrument dials. The screen digitally shows you the tachometer and speedometer like in the new XJ.
  • There is another integrated eight-inch screen embedded in the center console of the car.
  • Say goodbye to the stick. The new model will feature a ‘rising knob’ gear shift.
  • Meridian audio system from the Evoque will also be available in the Range Rover
  • It has laminated screens and side glass to slash noise levels.
  • Land Rover will also offer two-seat Executive Class seating package, which the company claims to offer the ‘ultimate in rear-seat luxury’.

Engine and Transmission

  • The Range Rover will be available in three engine options
  1. 3.0L V6 Diesel
  2. 4.4-litre V8 diesel
  3. 5.0-liter V-8 Petrol
  • Specific power outputs are not known yet but the power will range from 375 hp in standard guise and 510 hp in supercharged form.
  • An eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is standard regardless of engine.
Though the prices are not known yet, we expect them to range between £70,000 (60 lakhs INR) upwards of £120,000 (more than a Crore). Production will begin in a new Solihull facility and the it will be sold in more than 160 markets worldwide.

Ford sells over 2 lakh Figos in India

Ford India’s biggest success story yet is the launch of the Figo in the heart of the B Segment. Ford India’s best seller has entered the festival season of 2012, passing a sales landmark of two lakh units

Before the implementation of the ‘One Ford’ strategy, Ford was exploring many ideas to launch a small car in India, as their entry level car Ikon was out of the range of 7/10 Indian car buyers.
They picked out the Mk5 Fiesta (the outgoing Fiesta, popular in Europe and the UK) and brought it to India. Engineers from all over the world worked on reskinning it, redesigning the interior, fitting a new diesel and petrol powertrain, and modified the suspension and tires. Ford tested the Figo all around the world before launching it in India.
Ford engineers also worked on the concept of a child part where each component was split into sub-assemblies, and replacements were made available for a damaged part to reduce service and maintenance costs. Instead of replacing an entire alternator, using this new strategy, the defunct belt or fan could be replaced, reducing the spending to a fraction of what it would be otherwise.
This strategy, tied in with high levels of localization, convinced customers who shied away from Ford in the past due to its image of a high-maintenance brand.
Ford’s export business grew with the Figo, as the company ships petrol variants to 35 countries. Ford has drafted plans to sell the India-made Figo in 50 countries. The Figo has given Ford India many reasons to celebrate since its introduction in early 2010.
To continue this eventful journey, Ford has finished working on the Figo facelift for a festival season launch, sporting design touches inherited from new age Fords such as the EcoSport and Focus.

Chevrolet Trax to make its public debut at Paris Motor Show

While the world is going gaga over the Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport, a new contender is taking shape at the skunk works of Chevrolet.

Called the Chevrolet Trax (bares no relation to the Trax produced by Force Motors), the mini SUV is GM’s response to the growing compact SUV market.
And it is bound to be a cracking one because it was Chevrolet that invented the SUV segment in 1935 by launching the Chevrolet Suburban. The Chevrolet Trax will make its world debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September.
As you might already know, that the Trax is a redesigned Buick Encore/Opel Mokka. It is a four-door compact SUV whose dimensions are 4,248 mm in length, 1,776 mm in width and a wheelbase of 2,555 mm. It has been comprehensively redesigned to make sure it becomes a part of the bow-tie family.
It has some really clever bits in the interiors as well such as 60/40 split rear bench, 358L of luggage space, MyLink infotainment system with a navigation app, 7-inch touch screen, Start/Stop functionality, etc.
Safety equipments are plenty – six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), uphill/downhill assist (HSA), traction control (TC), ABS with electronic brake force distribution, Support trailer stability control, etc.
To keep costs low, the Chevrolet Trax will be available in FWD configuration, but you can also fit the car with an on-demand AWD. Engine options include:
  • 1.6-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with 115 hp
  • 1.4 turbo petrol rated at 140 hp
  • 1.7-liter unit turbo diesel unit with 130 hp
All engines will be mated to a 6-speed manual. The 1.4-liter turbo petrol and 1.7-liter diesel can be availed in six-speed automatic transmission as well.
The Chevrolet Trax will be on sale in 140 countries worldwide. We are not sure whether India has made it to the list till now.
Of course, if you look at the demand for compact SUVs, it is only going to rise in the future. But GM India does not have any immediate plans to introduce the Trax. It is focusing on filling up the hatch, sedan and MPV segments with vehicles from its Chinese partner SAIC’s stable.
However, we are pretty sure that by looking at the Renault Duster’s success, GM India is envious by now. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for this baby.

Countdown to Maybach’s shutdown begins as bookings close

Maybach, a loss-making luxury carline, once uttered in the same breath as Rolls-Royce and Bentley, is counting down to its shutdown.

It was last November that Daimler’s CEO Dr. Dieter Zetche confirmed that the Maybach brand will go no further.
Daimler AG which acquired Maybach in 1960, has released a new price list for the US and all the five models of  Maybach (57, 57 S, 62, 62 S, and Landaulet) are listed as “Discontinued” on it. The company will operate till April 2013 to honour the pending deliveries.
It is expected that the vacancy would be filled up by an ultra-luxurious variant from the next generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class platform. The next generation of the S-Class would be introduced in a variety of models including two limousine variants, according to media reports.
Compared to Maybach, British luxury marque Rolls Royce, under the direction of BMW, has made a successful turnaround. In 2011, Rolls-Royce sold 3,538 units around the world, while Maybach could clock a mere 180 units.
It would have been heartening to see the Maybach brand go through a transformation and continue challenging Rolls Royce. Daimler could have given it a new lease of life by experimenting with a new design language, thereby creating a clear distinction from the Mercedes-Benz model range.
Perhaps a different branding strategy, which used ‘Mercedes-Benz’ as a naming prefix, could have lead to different results.

2013 Range Rover leaks on to the web

Two photographs showing the 2013 Range Rover (codenamed L405) were leaked on to the world wild web today.
It was scheduled to be revealed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in late September and prior to the unveiling, Land Rover was expected to reveal the preliminary details and press photographs.
We suspect these images belong to that lot.
As we reported before, the 2013 Range Rover would carry design hints from the Range Rover Evoque. The roofline of the new Range Rover noticeably lower than its predecessor.
Structurally the Range Rover uses a lightweight rivet-bonded aluminum chassis which helps to reduce weight by over 40%, translating into a 500kg weight loss. This is certain to lead to better dynamics, good economy and reduced emissions.
Engine options include a 5-liter V8 in naturally-aspirated and supercharged forms. Power will vary from 260 to 510 horsepower. A 33 mpg hybrid-version of Range Rover is on the anvil for a debut in the coming years.
The 2013 RNGE rover will come with long Wheelbase variant for China. We’re expecting Land Rover to officially reveal photographs and details of the new Range Rover in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

All new Toyota Corolla takes shape from this concept

Though we didn’t know what to expect, a recent report on Car Magazine SA claims the 2013 Toyota Corolla’s design will based on hints from the recently showcased NS4 plug-in hybrid concept and the China-specific Yundong Shaungqing concept.
A Brazilian media report claimed that in early 2012, Toyota officials from India, Thailand, Brazil and USA were shown the next generation Toyota Corolla in Japan. Toyota insiders also said that the new Corolla will be strikingly new without any remnants from the current generation Corolla.
Since the design will be inherited from the NS4 plug-in hybrid concept and the Yundong Shaungqing, expect the new Corolla to have sharp edges and dynamic character lines. The design could change radically as there is eccentricity in the design of both concepts.
The Yundong Shaungqing’s side profile mixed with the NS4′s roofline and daylight opening could lead to drama in design. Could the Corolla signal the start of a new generation in design and styling for Toyota?
The new Corolla will be launched in the U.S first as it is the largest market for the nameplate. Toyota Kirlosakar Motor will try to bring the new Corolla into India as soon as possible as the Cruze has assumed segment leadership and is threatening to pull away.
We expect Toyota to show the new Corolla next year and launch it in India in 2014.

Conquest Evade, a 3.2 crore luxury SUV, will arrive in India this year

Conquest Vehicles, a Toronto-based company, will launch its first unarmored luxury SUV – The Evade – in India by the end of 2012.

The Evade is priced at a stonking Rs.3.2 crore, imported and distributed by The Magus Group.
The Evade uses Ford’s wide F550 Super Duty chassis to support the aluminum and mild steel body. Its cabin is presented in a 2+2 limousine-style seating. There is an option for two electronic executive style reclining seats with retractable driver partition or flatscreen TV.
Though the platform is from a Ford, the Evade comes with new headlights and taillights, narrow fender flares, a redesigned grille, hood scoop and a wide backdoor to allow for exit/entry of executive security though the rear of the vehicle. Forward looking infrared (FLIR) night vision camera systems are fitted in the front and rear of the vehicle.
The SUV is a stunning combination of several high strength composite metals and high-grade leathers and alcantara. It is a delightful mixture of ruggedness and luxury.
The cabin will provide over 400 cubic feet space of military inspired design cues with luxurious finishes. It has laptop trays and a third sunroof to make for an airy cabin.
When Conquest Vehicles claim that vehicles are ‘hand crafted,’ they really do mean business. The handcrafted elements include the vehicle’s steering wheel, proprietary hinges, running boards and even the key to start the beast is machined out of solid stainless steel. In addition, the vehicle’s handles are machined out of a solid block of aluminum.
The SUV will ride on front and rear commercial grade air suspension with power coming from either a gasoline or diesel engine. Power will be distributed to all four wheels.
Watch the video above to learn more about the Conquest Evade.

Customized Hyundai Elantra will be launched in China on August 23

India will finally get the Fluidic Elantra on the 13th August. That’s not headline news any longer. What certainly is, is a customized Hyundai Elantra will break cover in China, ten days later, on the 23rd of August.
In China, the car will be called ‘Elantra Langdong,’ to differentiate from the older Elantras that are still in production by the Beijing-Hyundai joint venture.
India will look at the Chinese Elantra with envy as the Elantra Landong gets chrome furnished front fascia and a longer wheelbase.
The word Langdong means “dynamic (car) for the new generation.” The Langdong is based on a design concept called Wind Craft that is a part of Hyundai’s Fluidic design language.
Besides the chrome, the Elantra Langdong employs a modified fog lamp cluster and new alloy wheels. The extra legroom helps up comfort of the passengers in the rear seat. Post the stretching of its wheelbase, the car measures 4,570 mm long, and sports a wheelbase of 2,740 mm – an increase of 4cm.
The Chinese Elantra will be powered by a 1.6L engine that produces 127hp and 155.5Nm or a 1.8L engine that produces 140hp and 174.6Nm. The transmission that goes with these engines is either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. Chinese media report that prices will range from 10 lakhs to 14.5 lakh rupees.

Duster Limousine – Now that’s a CAAAAR!

A group of 23 students have presented something unimaginably startling. The chaps have managed to stretch a Dacia Duster into a luxury limousine. Yes, this mudslinging street brawler is now a luxury limousine that can ferry a corporate CEO in utmost comfort.

The students in question are a part of Dacia’s masters of the EPA (Engineering Projects Auto) program. They have managed to cut the Duster in half at the B Pillar itself.
59 inches of sheet metal was then added to the wheelbase of the standard Duster to make it 5.83 meters long.
We see a cool matte black paint job on the outside with a strange brushed aluminum plate to make the side profile interesting. The standard design including the alloys have been preserved.
On the inside, there is a whole new story. It has four captain seats with a television and an android tablet. With the new black-white scheme, the interiors now look more premium.
Even though this Duster limousine weighs 1.6 tons, it is still powered by a 1.6L petrol engine. Our guess is that it is terribly underpowered.
But then again, no owner is going to drive it i.e. if it ever sees a production line

Audi A4 LWB launched in China with 6 cm more leg space

Long wheel base (LWB) luxury cars are a big fad in China. Almost every other luxury manufacturer markets a LWB version of their luxury sedan exclusive to the Chinese market.

If you are bored listening to us repeat that every few weeks, we have a fresh update for you today.
Audi has launched the A4L (a LWB version of the Audi A4) in China in a price range of at 2,72,800 yuan (23.72 lakhs INR) to 578.100 yuan (50.26 lakhs INR).
The A4L has been stretched by 6 cm and will be manufactured by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture. The Audi A4L will be available in three engine choices; 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TSFI and a new 3.0 turbo. Nothing serious has been changed in the mechanical department or equipment list.

However, the A4L’s improvement falls short (no pun intended) when compared to the transformation that the BMW 3 Series took on. The long wheel base version of the BMW 3 Series provides you 11 centimeters more legspace. Sadly, none of these LWBs are sold anywhere else in the world.
None of the luxury manufacturers think that LWB is a good idea for the Indian luxury sedan market. There are LWB versions of the flagship sedans such as the Audi A8L but nothing in the executive or business saloon categories.

Mercedes India launch R-Class R350 CDI 4MATIC for Rs.58.90 lakhs

The monstrosity of Mercedes R Class cannot be justified by just looking at pictures online. It’s big MPV; no wait, ‘big’ does not justify its proportions – ‘Humungous’ yes, that’s the right word for it.

On the Indian streets where might is right, Mercedes R Class can miniaturize almost everything on the road and off it as well.
And until now, it was only available in the form of a 3.5L V6 Petrol. Considering India is not part of the OPEC nations, you did not see many of them on the streets.
But Mercedes has finally done what needed to be done a long time back. Mercedes has finally dropped a 3.0L V6 diesel engine in the engine bay of the Mercedes R Class. The German automaker launched R-Class R350 CDI 4MATIC at Rs.58.9 lakhs (ex-showroom New Delhi).
The diesel variant of the R-Class comes mated to a 7G-TRONIC transmission with 4WD. Where the petrol V6 used to return a mileage of 4kmpl (or if you are really careful 6 kmpl), the diesel one sips the fuel to give you 11.25 kmpl.
For nearly 60 lakhs, you get:
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Electric sunroof
  • 18-inch ten spoke alloy wheels
  • Chrome package
On the inside, you have enough space to carry a small battalion in brilliant comfort features such as:
  • An in-dash six-disc CD changer and Universal media interface.
  • Electrically adjustable telescopic steering wheel
  • Memory seats
  • Three zone automatic climate control
  • Air-conditioning for rear row passengers
It’s a very unique offering with hardly any direct competitors. Most of its challengers are SUVs with not enough practicality. We will have to wait and see whether this diesel engine pumps some torque in the sales figures of the R Class.
Have a look at this video to experience the massiveness of Mercede R Class first hand

Suzuki S-Cross: SX4 concept car to debut at 2012 Paris Motor Show

Finally today we can get to see how the future of the SX4 will pan out. The Suzuki S-Cross, a C-segment crossover concept car is set to debut at 2012 Paris Motor Show as a route map.

The unveiling matters to us, as we have already shown you the spyshot of the new SX4 under camo and the SRK rendering of the sedan version, which to us is Maruti’s biggest challenge in the last 30 years.
While the Swift, Wagon R and the Dzire have moved to their next generations, the SX4, launched in 2006, has made do with cosmetic makeovers to sustain sales.
Suzuki say that the crossover concept S-Cross implements an “Emotion x Quality x Aerodynamics” design theme, which is characterized by unique and dynamic lines. Suzuki has infused design elements which suggest stability and solidity in creating a cutting-edge crossover look.
There are no details available on the powertrain front, but going by logic, the new SX4 could deploy petrol engines ranging from 1.6L to 2.0L and the Fiat Multijet options for diesel variants.
The production version of the concept will be ready by mid-2013, and should roll out of Suzuki's plant in Hungary. The sedan variant is expected to begin testing either in 2013 or later in this year.
Will this new design theme would do to the SX4 what “Fluidic” did for Hyundai?

Nissan celebrates 30 years of the Micra at Paris 2012

At the Paris Auto Salon in late September, Nissan will celebrate the Micra’s 30th birthday by selecting one example each of the three generations from the roads, and showcasing it on the show floor, after suitable refurbishment
The cars will be on show on Hall 8 of the show that runs between September 27 to October 14, 2012.
The owners of the three cars will be given keys to a new example of the latest generation Nissan Micra.
Although the Micra is new to India, it has a very long legacy outside our country. The first generation Nissan Micra was sold from 1982 to 1992. It measured 3.73 m long and weighed 750 kg. The petrol engines made 50 to 60 hp in Europe, and went up to 110 hp in Japan.
With a design that we can relate to with the Maruti Zen, the second gen model was on sale from 1992 to 2003. It measured 3.72 m long and weighed 775 kg. The engine outputs ranged from 54 to 90 hp. For the first time, a diesel engine was proposed.
The Micra 3 was sold between 2003 to 2010 with a design that paved the way for the current gen car. Weighing between 1,020 to 1,120 kg, Nissan brought more options under the bonnet with petrol power between 65 to 110 hp and diesel engine outputs of 68 hp and 86 hp.
The fourth generation Micra, dimensionally, is the biggest car of the lot with a superchaged engine option, a diesel engine option (offered only in India), a frugal three-cylinder NA unit and a racy 1.6-liter engine option topping the range. With this generation, Nissan moved production of Micra out of Britain and into India.

2014 BMW X4, the next niche crossover detailed

Moving away from the BMW 4 Series, we deep dive into BMW’ next product that could possibly lead to the other German rivals going back to their drawing boards.

Yes, we are talking about the BMW X4 – one of the several niches that the Bavarian automaker plans to bust open in the upcoming years.
The idea of the BMW X4 comes from a very successful BMW product – the BMW X6. The BMW X6 was a successful product despite the world automotive press criticizing it for its sheer pointlessness.
Now, BMW wants to re-create history by making a smaller version of the BMW X6. Touted to be the smallest coupe-crossover from the BMW stable, the BMW X4 definitely has a very important task cut out for it. It should be able to sell volumes to keep BMW on the top of the charts and far ahead of the competition.

What do we know about the 2014 BMW X4?

  • Frank-Peter Arndt, BMW Group Board Member confirmed the existence of the BMW X4 and revealed that production will occur at the Spartanburg plant in the US.
  • The easiest way to understand the X4 is to think of it as a downsized BMW X6.
  • Internally codenamed cF26, the BMW X4 will share the platform with the BMW X3. It will measure 4.65 meters long (183 inches), the same length as the X3. It will be offered in four-wheel drive versions only.
  • Design wise, the BMW X4 will take its styling cues from the X6. At the same time, it will maintain an unique stance with a comprehensively redesigned front fascia. A swooping, BMW X6-like roofline will be the key characteristic of the new SAC. The roofline will blend into a bolder, more athletic rear-end.
  • The X4 will also inherit the engine lineup from the X3. A hybrid version, similar to the X6 ActiveHybrid, is being planned for the future. An eight-speed ZF transmission will be standard across the range.
  • There are also plans for a X4M with 450hp mated to a M-DCT gearbox transmitting power to all wheels. It will also feature sport tuned suspension and an electro-mechanical control system. BMW plans to use carbon fiber extensively while making the X4M to ensure a lightweight construction.
  • When ready in 2014, the BMW X4 will compete against Range Rover Evoque and  Porsche Macan crossovers.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe comes under the spotlight

With challenging times ahead, the luxury car market needs to re-invent itself with every passing year. The leader of the luxury car market – BMW – is facing intense heat from Audi and Mercedes who are not giving anything away. Thus, the leader needs to find new segments to lure the customers to the showrooms.
One such attempt by BMW is launching a new product line – the 4 Series Gran Coupe. The easiest way to understand the BMW 4 Series is that it is ‘a smaller 6 Series.’
Many test mules have been spotted all across Europe with complete body camouflage. The existing BMW 3 Series (F30) will only retain the sedan, LWB sedan and station wagon variants. The coupe and convertible version will be branded under 4 Series moniker.

What do we know about the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe?

  • The new 4 Series lineup (2-door Coupe/Convertible, 4-door Coupe/Convertible) will slot between the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series.
  • The BMW 4 Series will be designed in such a way that it appeals to a younger demographic as a financially viable alternative to the high-end 6 Series Coupe.
  • Internally codenamed F35 (2 door) and F36 (4-door), the 4 Series lineup will combine the design and driving dynamics of the 6 Series Coupe with interior room and amenities for up to five passengers.
  • The distinctive identity of the 4 Series models will be the coupe-like look.
  • The 4 Series models will be powered by four and six-cylinder turbocharged engines. It will come with adaptive suspension to allow the driver to adjust the ride settings.
  • The BMW 4 Series will compete against the A5 Sportback and the upcoming baby SLS model
The BMW 4 Series lineup will go on sale in 2014. We will keep you updated on any development in this direction, so stay with IAB

Brazilian presenter can’t wait for the camouflage to come off the Hyundai HB20

A Brazilian presenter from Auto Esporte recently visited Hyundai’s Brazilian manufacturing plant to learn the progress of the Hyundai HB20, Hyundai’s Brazil-specific i20-style hatchback. The feeling is understandable to a petrolhead or reporter – the wait to see a new car is a bittersweet anticipation.

Not anymore for this man, as he gives viewers his own teaser clippings of the car! Can’t say whether Hyundai enjoyed this.
While we cannot understand his language, more elements of the car’s design are beginning to emerge. As we suspected, the HB20 is a cross between the Sonata and the i-Gen i20. It is powered by 1-liter and 1.6-liter flex-fuel engines.
The HB20 is fitted with front airbags and optional ABS. Electric Windows, CD player with iPod input and steering wheel controls, hydraulically assisted steering wheel, air-conditioning, auto headlights, parking sensor and alloy wheels are some of the other features on this test vehicle.
There’s no business for the HB20 outside South America, but we have read on Brazilian media channels that a mini SUV built using the same mechanicals, and sporting the same design language, will be introduced in the next couple of years. That is a product Hyundai India desperately needs if it has to stay with the pack as the mini SUV race is attracting everyone’s participation.

Punto-based Fiat 500X will visit the Paris Motor Show

The Fiat 500X was teased by Fiat during a media assembly earlier this year, so this update is not exactly shocking. Fiat is working on the Punto platform to release several new models including an MUV and an SUV, under the 500 umbrella.

The Fiat 500X shown here is a rival to the MINI Countryman, and shall be offered in 2WD and 4WD layout.
The 500X enters a new territory but with its masculine looks (check out the chunky cladding around the wheel arches, the beefed up ride height and the aggressive bumpers) it has been tasked with appealing to not just to the fairer sex. The 500 traditionally has a female fan following.
The 500X will be about the same size as the 500L MPV, measuring a little over four meters long and have about 400 liters of boot space.  The 500X will share 4WD technology with the Panda 4×4, that uses a simple hydraulic clutch system, fitted ahead of its rear differential, and turns the rear wheels when the grip is lost at the front.
Powertrain options have not been detailed, but Auto Express expects the base model to use a 93bhp 1.4-litre TwinAir petrol or the 104bhp 1.0-litre two-cylinder. Multijet diesel engines will not miss out.
At the Paris Motor Show in late September, Fiat will bring an almost production-ready Fiat 500X.

Chevrolet Cruze facelift for America to feature interesting revisions; Will India adopt these changes?

The Chevrolet Cruze was revealed to the world at the Paris Motor Show in 2008 as a replacement for the Optra/Lacetti. It was designed by GM Daewoo and engineered by Opel for a development cost of a whopping 4 billion dollars.
GM decided to give it a minor facelift for 2012 to make sure that the audience’s interest is captivated. GM India however did not subscribe to the idea of launching a facelift and upgraded the mechanical package, a few weeks ago.
The Cruze is one GM’s biggest success stories in recent times and for the first time, GM was competitive in the C Segment in the US, where it almost outran the Toyota Corolla, the market leader, last year.
But the rumormill has started to churn for the updates the Cruze will receive in the US, about the same time next year. The Cruze’s launch in the US was not simultaneous with the global launch and the car was customized to the American market’s needs, before its launch in 2010. The facelift program could add more to the individuality of the US-market Cruze according to a report on GM Inside News.

The report states that the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze will don a front front fascia inspired by the Chevrolet Impala. The Impala features Chevy‘s new global design theme that also made it to the Chevy Traverse.
The new Cruze will bid adieu to the iconic Chevy crossbar to adopt a smaller, squarer grille. The headlights will be narrower but swept back to look sporty. Use of LED technology for DRLs is inevitable. Most of the changes will be restricted to the front fascia only. The Cruze is being offered in various body styles, such as a wagon, four-door and hatch, and there aren’t a lot more options GM can explore beyond these.
The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze will also get a brand new 2.0 Eco-D engine which is currently being developed by GM’s Powertrain teams in Torino, Italy and Pontiac, Michigan. GM’s Russian division will contribute by developing the accessory drive, acoustic cover and other specialized components. GM engineers are planning to extract a fuel efficiency figure of 21.25 kmpl from this new engine.
We should expect the Chevrolet Cruze facelift to be displayed at the 2013 Detroit Motor show. Will GM India adopt the same cosmetic changes to the local Cruze when it feels that it is time for a refresh?

Malaysia gets a Jazz Hybrid while California goes green with Jazz EV

Honda wants to make this world a clean and green place and when you are an automobile manufacturer building cars with a tail pipe, that’s hard to achieve. However all hope is not lost if you read what Honda has been up to globally.
Honda is constructing a second production line at its manufacturing plant in Malacca, Malaysia, where it will produce small cars including the recently launched Honda Jazz Hybrid.
Malaysia is the largest market for hybrid vehicles in all of South East Asia and Honda visualizes that this demand will grow. In order to have an upper hand on the situation it is starting local production of the Jazz Hybrid with its production and sales venture Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
The production of Jazz hybrid will currently take place on the existing line and then moved to the newly built lines by the end of this year.
Honda is the largest hybrid car seller in Malaysia. It sold 4,600 units during 2011 and is targeting to sell 10,000 hybrid cars this year. With the addition of the new line Honda expects to double production capacity instantly.
The Honda Jazz Hybrid comes fitted with a 1.3 litre i-VTEC engine that produces 88 hp at 5,800 rpm and 121 Nm torque at 4,500 rpm. It is equipped with an electric motor which produces 14 hp at 1,500 rpm and 78 Nm torque at 1,000 rpm. Fuel consumption for the hybrid model is 21.3 kmpl while CO2 emissions are 110 grams per km.

Honda Brio AT to break cover in India in late 2012?

According to a report on Gaadi.com, Honda may launch the Brio Automatic before the end of this year. While we are all eagerly expecting Honda to launch a significantly important diesel varient of BRIO, Honda seems to be interested in giving the petrol car a partner.
We reported in a post recently that Honda has transplanted an automatic transmission in the Indonesion Brio and it would be not be a bad idea if Honda follows the same in India too.
It seems like Honda is on the same page as us. Our reader Hitin Suri was also for this idea, he used the comment box to hammer the point home.
The automatic box that is likely to be mated to Brio’s 1.2L i-VTEC engine is a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the same technology that features on the Indonesian Brio.
The Brio is aimed at the crowded cities and towns where an automatic transmission is a no-brainer. Lack of choices and proper communication are some reasons why AT has not caught on with the Indian motorist.
The AT variant may not make Brio India’s best selling car, but it would be innovation or a first in its segment.
So which one do you think is going to come first? Brio Diesel or Brio Automatic?
